empowering communities and restoring pride

Panama is a small country, with a large percentage of people living in rural communities. According to the World Bank, 31.22% of the entire population of Panama lived in rural areas in 2021. Our focus area right now, Piñas Bay, is located along the coastal zones of the Darien Tropical Rain Forest in the Republic of Panama. Puerto Piñas is a small town of about 400 homes with a population of roughly 1200 local residents or “Piñeros” as they are known.Although a small area, Piñas Bay is home to different ethnic cultures with very distinct values and standards of living.

Piñas Bay is home to approximately 1,200 Piñeros, in 400 homes.

Our work in the community of Piñas Bay includes:
Government presence in the community is limited to a small school, health clinic, postal office, and the highly trained border patrol.  Due to minimal education help received from the national and local government after schooling years, the Piñeros dedicate themselves to subsistence farming, traditional fishing, or work for Tropic Star Lodge, the main employer of the community. By improving the village infrastructure, we can help to restore pride to the community, and in turn, improve quality of life for all.
