Panama has a population of 4.8 million people, of which 1.3 million are children under the age of 18. Many schools throughout the country do not have sufficient resources to provide quality teaching materials or adequate facilities for all students’ needs. In fact, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Panama ranks as one of the most illiterate countries in the Western Hemisphere. Only 44% of adults are literate, while only 60% of children can read and write at an appropriate level.
There are many barriers preventing children from accessing quality education in Panama: poverty, geographical isolation, language barriers, lack of qualified teachers, and lack of infrastructure.
